Routes

This is what I wrote in 2001.  Since then I've done most of this with a few changes in plan along the way.  I ended up falling in love with Nee, teaching at Rajabhat in Udon Thani and then taking another year long adventure through China, Japan, Korea and then across Russia via the Trans-Siberian railroad to Europe.  There I borrowed a motorcycle and toured Europe.  Nee was waiting for me when I returned.  We got married and went to visit the US and then without warning she left me.  After I finished my teaching contract, I went to America by way of India, Nepal, Israel, Jordan, Egypt and Turkey.  There I bought another motorcycle and toured North and Central America.  Now (2009), I'm teaching again at Rajabhat and my next big adventure is an around the world cruise on my friend Erik's 20m yatch, the Angantyr.  This is scheduled for 2012.

Original 2001 plans:

Right now I plan to go west .  Check here for Route details as they develop.

Here is the overview of the route as I see it in January of 2001.  I'll start by air from Los Angeles or San Francisco.  I'll slowly approach Sydney with two or three stops in the Pacific.  New Zealand and Fiji are definite, and two other South Pacific stops up to 30 days are possible.

After arriving in Sydney, I'll spend a couple of months in Australia (Tasmania?, Great Barrier Reef, etc.), then I'll exit to Indonesia by air or sea.  I'll visit Bali and the great beaches in Malaysia and Southern Thailand.  I may spend an extended period in Thailand if I can work out a deal for CELTA (Certificate for English Language Teaching for Adults) in Bangkok and teach for a while.   By this point I'll have been on the road more than a year.

Then I plan to visit Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam.    Traveling mostly by boat, train, or local transport, I plan to enter China.  Zigzagging through Southwestern China, I plan to end up in Beijing where I can catch the Trans-Siberian Railroad during the autumn of my second year on the road.  A side trip from Moscow to St. Petersburg will be followed by a visit to Norway.

Then I plan to visit Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey.  I'll put my toe in Africa to see the Pyramids and then figure out a plan to meander through Western Europe.
