Croatia

Windy and windy

25-28SEP2004 The rain continued mixed with some sunny spots, as I entered Croatia.  And there was a new surprise...wind.  Really strong wind.  With gusts up to 120km/h.  TBGS and I really had to struggle down the winding roads.  As soon as I reached the coast of the Mediterranean the wind started.  They call the wind burra and it whips the sea into a froth.  Every hairpin corner brings a new challenge.  Especially when the bike is angling into the wind.  I'm sure at least once a whirlwind hit me and moved me and TBGS half a meter.

The wind was so strong along the coast that the police routed me inland via Gospic.  This turned out to be a lucky detour.  I met Mihkol and his friends.  I stopped by the road and they started chatting about my motorcycle.  Soon, I was in a cafe drinking coffee and then we went to his flat for soup and some pretty powerful brandy.  He insisted that I take some souvenirs so I now have sergeant stripes from the Croatian army and a decal with Amerika written on it.  Magdelena, his niece, translated when our sign language gave out.  Nice people!

Back on the coast, the wind continued to blow and when I took the tollway (no other choice) it blew away my ticket and cost me about $20.

All the way down the coast I kept searching for an internet connection.  Nothing.  I'm in the middle of arranging tickets for my return to America and Thailand and it's important to be in touch with my travel agent.

I didn't find an internet cafe until Dubrovnik, a really beautiful city in the south of Croatia.  I caught up on my email and then made plans to return to the internet cafe in the morning to update my website, which is really getting behind.

From my room at the top of the city I saw a beautiful rainbow---yes, it's still raining.  I've checked the weather forecast and it's supposed to be sunny in Greece.  At least it's not cold.
