3-7SEP2004 I camped near Calais on a bluff overlooking the ocean next
to a big WWII bunker. I had a little white wine and set off for Paris.
I met Laure in New Zealand skydiving. With a little luck and some
coaching I found her flat in Paris near the Gare Austerlitz.
Laure had just returned from a trip to America and her photography equipment
took up most of the spare room. Her flat was so small that we had to take
turns breathing. She is currently a starving artist (photographer) and
gets lots of work from the music business. She was working like crazy to
put together a demo for photographically enhanced DVDs...the wave of the future
in the music biz.
I took TBGS and explored Paris. Motorcycles are great in big
cities. I could park almost anywhere. I saw the standard
sights: Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, etc. But, when faced by the
prospect of another museum...even the Louvre...I just couldn't hack it.
So, instead, I spent a great afternoon fiddling around on the Eiffel
Tower. I could see all of Paris and didn't have to fight the
traffic. So much for culture.
We had dinner at Emmanuel's flat. Emmanuel traveled with Laure when she
came to visit me in Thailand. She cooked a great meal. We had some
good French wine and I uploaded photos to my website (Laure has a Mac).
I could have spent several days in Paris but I'm beginning to feel the
pressure of time. Europe may look small on the map but it expands as you
ride.
I pitched my tent on the way to Germany at a small country auberge.
Laure said it would never happen but, since they were remodeling they were
gracious enough to let me camp.
Traveling through France east of Paris and toward Germany was
interesting. I decided to take a short cut and ran into the Maginot
Line. I looked for a road but, somehow, I don't think it is supposed to be
easy to get through the border there.
