17-20OCT2004 Back in France, I spent a soggy night at an overpriced
campground near Cannes. I enjoyed another night at a campground near
Toulon where the staff was friendly and the price was right.
Laure, my friend in Paris, had recommended a visit to the Camargue, a
beautiful area at the mouth of the Rhone River. I stayed in a little hotel
in Port St. Louis and had some extremely mediocre chicken fajitas at the nearby
restaurant. The next day I enjoyed the sights of the Camargue. White
horses, a peculiar architecture and some uncrowded roads. And, thanks to
the truck drivers, I spotted a roadside restaurant and had the best food of my
visit to France.
I missed most of Marseille by going through a tunnel and whizzed through the
rest of France a bit miffed by the high prices and sub-standard accomodations.
Yes, the countryside was beautiful. Provence does have great light.
The lavender shutters on the houses were quaint but I was ready for a new
country.
