Riding in the Polish countryside is a wonderful experience. Off of the main roads the villages are small and the roads wind through beautiful fields. The wild flowers are blooming and the birds are singing-that is when the sun shines. I made my way to the famous beach resort of Leba to bask in the sun. What sun. Instead I spent the day washing and chatting with a business man who had a big family in the campground. They fed me some wonderful soup and I enjoyed the conversation--mostly sign language with an occasional assist from his niece or passersby. My air mattress is still leaking but the ground is so wet that I slept comfortably. One of the things I love about spontaneous travel is when something unexpectedly special happens. Near the town of Stare Jablonski, I started looking for a place to stay. I was looking for a room again because it was raining again. I folowed the sign to a classy looking hotel but the guard at the gate told me the rate and I said I was looking for something cheaper. He pointed to the Elemis resort sign www.elemis.alpha.pl . I rented a small wooden bungalow in a beautiful wooded setting and headed to the restaurant for dinner. The host, Tomasz, helped me pick a special dinner of Polish specialties. While I waited I joined a group of Poles who were singing around the campfire. There was an acordion and two of the women had beautiful voices. They made me feel very welcome. I even sang "The Eyes of Texas". I went to sleep that night with a warm feeling. 21-23JUL2004 When I arrived in Tomza the sky was turning black and the wind was starting to blow. I wimped out and took an overpriced hotel room to avoid the storm. After a wonderful breakfast I hit the road for Warsaw. It was an obstacle course of new construction with frequent stops and rough patches of road. I'm getting a bit tired of big cities, so I just breezed through Warsaw with a few glances at the old town and found a camp west of Poznan and rested for two nights. I'm planning on visiting Poland again on this trip. It's a beautiful country with good food and good beer, not to mention good people. |
