28-29SEP2004 I was a little nervous about traveling in
Yugoslavia. I talked to several people who all had some advice. But,
the advice was a bit contradictory. I finally plotted a course through
Montenegro and then through Kosovo avoiding Mitrovica.
The road in Montenegro was one of the most spectacular rides of the trip.
Through a mountain gorge with a rushing river, in and out of tunnels and around
sharp turns, the road was wonderful.
When I arrived in Kosovo, I had to pay 30 Euros for an extra insurance policy.
I studied the map and took a short cut...or it looked like a shortcut on
the map. Instead it was a very narrow, steep, winding one-lane road
through small villages and farms. It took me almost 2 hours just to cover
40 kilometers. After the shortcut, I returned to the main road and made
better time.
I stayed the night in Prestina next to the UN compound. The motel was
overpriced and pretty shabby. On the advice of the owner I locked
the front wheel and, for the first and only time on the trip, locke the bike to
the metal rail in front of my room. I´ve never seen so many official
vehicles. Almost 10 percent of the traffic was officials of one sort or
another.
The only good thing about Kosovo was the cheap cigarettes. And they
must be safe because there was no health warning on the pack.
