Knee Deep in Asphalt

Location: Corvallis, Oregon USA    Date: 5/20/2001

A few days ago one of my customers asked me if I was getting "cold feet" now that my departure is imminent.  I replied that I was so hot to trot that if I tried to walk across the street I'd be knee deep in asphalt.  It is a curious thing that as I get closer to departure many people feel duty bound to remind me of the dangers.  "Don't get kidnapped".  "Watch what you eat".  "Be sure to watch your pack".  Yada yada.

I've been dealing with the FUD factor for months.  Fear-Uncertainty-Doubt.  I'm not naive enough to believe that traveling solo is not without some danger.  But, with reasonable preparations and good luck I expect to be able to handle most situations without great difficulty. I've gotten the recommended immunizations.  I've had my teeth optimized.  My health is good and I've got all the comfort/safety gadgets I can carry without the danger of a hernia.  I'm even taking a motorcycle safety course.

I did break down and order a smaller sleeping bag and a small lightweight tent.  This brings my pack up to 30 pounds.  I made a CD backup of all my critical data, passwords, utilities, and a bunch of pictures.  It's amazing how much data will fit on a 600 MB CD.  I've got copies of my tickets, my passport, my driver's license, my immunization record, and my birth certificate.  I'm taking a letter from my doctor regarding the prescription medicines I'm taking "just in case".

I have only three more days at The Computer Exchange.  The new owners have been very gracious and so the transition has been pleasant and painless.  It's nice to know the ol' shop will be in good hands.

By this time three weeks from now I'll be on Amtrak heading to Los Angeles.
