I Tangle With the Web

Location: Corvallis, Oregon USA    Date: 1/2/00

As I start to accumulate information, it occurs to me that a website might be a good way to organize information. I can use the information, others can use the information and with a little ingenuity, maybe I can use it to stay in touch and help finance my trip. There’s one small catch. I don’t have a website and I don’t know how to program one. I suppose it’s a good thing I have eighteen months. The first step should be a domain name. How about digitaltraveler.com? Nice try but its already in use digitaltraveler.com/. It looks interesting. Maybe I should contact them and see if we can work something out. Ok, what about digitaltraveler.net? This looks more promising. Either it’s not registered or its not on line. Let’s try digitalnomad.com. Somebody has registered it and it’s under construction. Ok, digitalnomad.net. No server found. So this is a possibility, too. Time to do some informal market research among my contacts. And now for a little random surfing. I haven’t used newsgroups before so maybe its time to learn. First I fired up my news reader (part of my browser) and looked up travel. I started with alt.travel. It seems to have a mixture of personal and commercial messages. I found an interesting link cybernesco.com/trav1.stm/. This site offers links to other travel sites. A person could easily get lost in cyberspace.
